Hotel Snapshot

With its grand opening in 1969 during the height of Marbella’s “Golden Age,” Don Carlos Marbella faced a daunting renovation effort when conversations began a couple years ago around revitalizing the Costa del Sol icon. Enhancing an already renowned property presents a challenge, but it was one Chilean interior designer Jaime Beriestain mastered through his commitment to honoring the hotel’s original bones and heritage. Through the use of tactile Andalusian materials like raffia, local stone, and warm woods, Beriestain preserved the hotel’s striking mid-century architecture while softening its geometric framework.

The property sits on 215,000 square feet, operating 308 rooms and 24 private residences—unfolding across its signature tower and a series of low-rise wings and residences set within the gardens overlooking the magnificent coastline. When not dwelling in one of the hotel’s newly refreshed rooms, guests can bounce between the multiple pools, landscaped tropical gardens, and a full wellness spa—all with the beach just steps away. A focus remains on athletics inside the property, which is anchored by the Rafa Nadal Tennis Center and various padel facilities, all for guests to participate in during their stay.

Design & Character

At Don Carlos Marbella, the redesign feels less like a reinvention and more like a careful restoration of spirit. Rather than stripping the property of its identity in favor of trendy minimalism, Beriestain approached the transformation as a tribute to Marbella’s glamorous late-1960s heyday—when the Costa del Sol was becoming Europe’s playground for jet-set travelers.

What Beriestain produced balances nostalgia with restraint; cream, coral, sandy neutrals, and aquatic blues mirror the shifting Mediterranean landscape outside, while glass walls throughout frame the tropical gardens and sea beyond like artwork.

The Rooms

Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or as a family, the hotel’s accommodations ensure every member of your party feels accounted for. Room categories span from junior suites and larger residential-style suites to options with private pool access, expansive penthouse suites, and a presidential penthouse made for bigger groups—or anyone who simply wants extra space to spread out.

The suites feel more like private residences than hotel rooms, styled with custom furnishings and wallpapers inspired by traditional Spanish shawls. These thoughtful details infuse the property with an approachable warmth that feels deeply sophisticated yet entirely effortless.

The Food & Drink

The hotel’s dining follows the rhythm of a classic Andalusian stay—breakfasts overlooking the gardens, long poolside lunches, and sea-view dinners that make it easy to stay on property for every meal. The culinary approach is led by Chef Francisco Zafra Collado, who successfully reinterprets regional Andalusian dishes with a focus on seasonal produce from southern Spain, strong ties to the land, and technical precision. The menu feels simple, but is shaped by seasonal produce, clean, precise execution, and bright finishes of citrus and olive oil. The dishes highlight the natural character of ingredients rather than overworking them.

Among the newest additions is Manero Marbella, a lively new bar, bistro, and terrace concept that stretches from a greenery-filled central bar beneath open skies to moody, low-lit indoor tables and a sweeping terrace overlooking the pool and sea at Don Carlos Marbella. The hotel also maintains this approach across the eight restaurants and bars on the property, including five in-house concepts and three collaborations, with Lucia Marbella as the newest addition—a relaxed beachside club rooted in the same focus on fresh, Mediterranean-led cooking, set against a glistening sea backdrop.

The Amenities

Operating as one of Marbella’s premier kid-friendly destinations, the resort is home to Don Carlos Kids—a dedicated club for children aged four to 12. Young guests can participate in interactive art workshops, cooking classes, as well as enjoy the three waterslides leading into a private pool—all while parents are free to fully enjoy the stunning grounds.

Aside from the waterslides, it is impossible to miss the hotel’s two outdoor pools, where signature yellow sun loungers bask under the Andalusian sun—and the same elegant aesthetic extends to the resort's remarkable clay tennis courts. The Rafa Nadal Tennis Center consists of seven premium clay courts boasting 360-degree views of the shimmering ocean and lush tropical gardens. As the first of its kind in mainland Spain, the center offers a purposeful training environment for every skill level, inspired by the methodology of the great Rafa Nadal.

Spa & Wellness

The onsite spa, Don Carlos Spa, is truly a safe haven for calm and restoration. The space is breathtaking—a blend of Biophilic modernism and contemporary luxury wellness architecture, prioritizing clean lines and seamlessly integrating natural elements into the structural interiors.  Guests can indulge in various facial treatments, full-body massages, a traditional sauna steam, and a renowned hydrotherapy water circuit designed to calm the mind and body.

Beyond the spa, your wellness journey continues with private or small-group yoga and Pilates sessions led by the hotel staff, as well as access to the two gyms—one on the ground floor of the main building and the other located in the Rafa Nadal Tennis Center. Effortlessly integrated into your stay, the hotel’s athletic options ensure you never have to pause your fitness routine while away from home.
