Hotel Snapshot
Tucked into seven leafy acres in North Hollywood (a respectable distance from the chaos of the Sunset Strip but still minutes from Universal), you'll stumble upon The Garland. It's rare LA hotel that lets you in on the city without making you suffer through it, and after more than five decades in business, it's clear it has made its mark on the neighborhood. Originally founded in 1972 by Old Hollywood actress Beverly Garland and her husband Fillmore Crank, the family-owned, Spanish mission-influenced property has aged into something charmingly singular: a 257-room retreat with the soul of a midcentury road-trip motor lodge and the polish of a $20 million renovation. Think groovy, in the least ironic way possible.
Design & Character
The Garland leans all the way into its retro identity but somehow makes it feel current rather than kitschy. Browns, oranges, and corals wash through the lobby and common spaces and carry seamlessly into the rooms, creating a warm, cohesive throughline that feels less like a themed hotel and more like a well-kept time capsule — appropriate given the proximity to Universal City and other Hollywood set mainstays. The Spanish mission architecture, low-slung and tile-roofed, gives the property a residential, almost neighborhood-y feel, and the layout itself does a lot of quiet work: 257 rooms spread across multiple buildings means you rarely pass more than a handful of guests in the hallways. It still feels like an escape, even on a busy weekend.
The Rooms
I checked into a suite, and it was expansive in the way that suites at LA boutique hotels rarely are, easily a play for families or for solo travelers who simply want to stretch out. The retro palette continues here, grounded by genuinely good fundamentals: a very comfortable bed, a generously sized shower, a private balcony, and thoughtful touches like Pasadena-based LATHER bath amenities, a single-cup brewer for morning coffee, and Enseo streaming on the TV. While the freeway noise is real (this is, after all, deep in the Valley), it's also the kind of low hum you might stop noticing by the second cup of coffee (or glass of wine) out on the balcony. Two Wellness Suites kitted out for fitness travelers come with an in-room Peloton, Bowflex weights, and a Mirror, if that's your thing.
Food & Drink
The Front Yard helmed by Executive Chef Larry Greenwood, is the social heart of the property. It's an indoor-outdoor neighborhood spot that does brisk business with both hotel guests and locals (plus the occasional A-list drop-in). Whether you're trying the à la carte breakfast or late-night happy hour, it's all delightful: warm, attentive service, a smart cocktail program, and a California-forward menu that takes itself just seriously enough. The hotel's signature Sky Ranch Rosé — produced at a Santa Ynez vineyard owned by Beverly Garland's daughter — is a sweet bit of family lore in a glass. For something a little more theatrical, the newly opened Tangerine Room hosts "Good Times in the Tangerine Room" every Monday, with cocktails, live music, and full retro flair.
Amenities
The pool is the property's beating heart for good reason: heated, well-maintained, and especially restorative after a workout in the 24-hour fitness center. What surprised me most, though, was the steady drumbeat of small, free or included programming — complimentary wine and snacks one afternoon, dive-in movies at sundown on weekends, poolside temporary tattoos the next. It's the kind of texture that takes a hotel from a nice place to sleep to a place you actually want to hang out. The complimentary trolley to Universal Studios and CityWalk is a real perk if you're traveling with kids or just want to skip the rideshare math.
Location & Neighborhood Recs
This is the part I'd underline for anyone considering Hollywood or West Hollywood instead. The Garland sits at the edge of the NoHo Arts District, a walkable pocket of independent theaters, coffee shops, and unfussy restaurants that feels like the version of LA you’d be delighted to luxuriate in. From the property, you can walk to the original Brady Bunch House (yes, really), and you're a short drive from Tujunga Village, Studio City's Ventura Boulevard, the Hollywood Bowl, and Warner Bros. Studio Tour. The complimentary shuttle handles Universal. Burbank Airport (BUR) is ten minutes away, which makes The Garland one of the easiest LA arrivals on offer.
