Hotel Snapshot
Given that Nemacolin stretches across more than 2,200 bucolic, wonderfully isolated acres in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, you might be tempted to call it a resort. But with three hotels (The Grand Lodge, The Chateau, and Falling Rock), two residential-style options (The Estate and The Homes), and nearly every amenity you’d expect from an upscale stay—plus plenty you wouldn’t, including wildlife habitats and an antique car museum—it defies conventional classification.
That’s no accident. Privately owned by the Hardy family of 84 Lumber since opening in 1987, Nemacolin is a deeply personal project. But despite its polish—from the sharp staff uniforms by Brooklyn-based designer Jackson Wiederhoeft to the striking all-blue Bleu Room where afternoon tea is served—it manages to feel easy and playful, inviting you to have fun, whatever that means to you. And though I’m not usually a fan of property taglines, Nemacolin has more than lived up to its own—“Real Life Magic”—every time I’ve visited.
Design & Character
Nemacolin is home to three unique hotels: the opulent, Parisian-style Château; the all-suite Grand Lodge; and my favorite, Falling Rock. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic work and the Art Deco movement, the 42-room boutique property—which blends natural elements like wood and stone with geometric shapes and sleek lines—sits on the 18th hole of the legendary Mystic Rock golf course. Its slightly remote location—set apart from Nemacolin’s lively heart—along with its adults-only policy, enhances the peaceful vibe.
The Rooms
Though Falling Rock’s 42 guest rooms and suites are plush cocoons of earth tones and natural materials, it’s the 24-hour butler service that really sets the hotel apart. Having someone available at any hour to anticipate even the smallest needs—from pressing my dinner outfits to preparing an aromatherapy bath in the cavernous 200-gallon soaking tub—felt like the ultimate expression of quiet luxury. I also loved the thoughtful daily rituals, such as morning coffee delivery and a nightly milk-and-cookie turndown.
The Food & Drink Situation
Another perk of staying at Falling Rock is the complimentary breakfast at Aqueous, the hotel’s signature restaurant, where floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the rolling countryside and golf course. Alongside morning favorites like avocado toast and acai bowls, you’ll also find unexpected options such as Korean street tacos stuffed with cabbage, ham, and egg. At dinner, fresh seafood and imaginative pan-Asian dishes—from gochujang-spiked jumbo prawns to flaming salmon sushi rolls—take center stage.
It’s no exaggeration to say you can find just about anything you’re craving at Nemacolin, whether it’s the showstopping 44-ounce prime tomahawk at Fawn & Fable, a crispy Margherita pizza from Gusto!, or a tuna poke bowl at The Peak. Service is bright and engaging across the board, extending even to casual counter spots like PJ’s Ice Cream Parlor and The Patisserie.
Amenities
This is where Nemacolin truly stands apart. I can’t think of another hotel or resort with such diverse amenities. You’ll find all the hallmarks of a luxury stay here—quality dining, a restorative spa, attentive service—but it’s the unexpected details that make Nemacolin one of my favorite places to unplug. Highlights include, but aren’t limited to, the 1,000-plus-piece Hardy Family Art Collection—displayed throughout the property, even on the golf course—with works by Fernando Botero, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Alexander Calder; the Bleu Room, a dreamy, tucked-away parlor for afternoon tea; and Nightcap, a swanky lounge for late-night cocktails and live jazz.
Location & Neighborhood Recs
Here’s the thing about Nemacolin: once you arrive, you won’t want—or need—to leave. Unlike many American resorts with limited dining, recreation, and lodging, it’s a destination unto itself—designed for settling in and staying awhile.
