Malibu’s iconic mansion-lined coast is a defining part of Los Angeles culture. Despite facing significant destruction during the Palisades Fire in 2025, this picturesque stretch of PCH remains a quintessential slice of the LA experience, and the ultra-exclusive Nobu Ryokan Malibu offers an immersive home base on Carbon Beach. Formerly a 1950s hotel, the Japanese-inspired inn has been reimagined into an intimate escape with just 16 rooms, making it one of the most exclusive properties under the Nobu Hospitality umbrella.
Design & Character
The property is situated right off PCH, but after pulling into the camouflaged driveway, the automatic gate closes behind you, and it feels as though you’ve been completely removed from the hustle and bustle of Malibu’s most touristy area. You’re then guided to the lobby through zen gardens featuring small ponds with tranquil waterfalls and lush foliage. An almost mid-century modern structure that feels equal parts Japanese and California welcomes you, and you’re quickly whisked away to your room, where your bags have somehow already arrived.
The Rooms
With just 16 rooms across the entire property, Nobu Ryokan Malibu feels more like an oceanfront estate than a hotel. The garden rooms are cozy and quiet, featuring tucked-away patios with private fireplaces. But for the ultimate Malibu experience, a beachfront or ocean suite is necessary. The highlight of my second-floor ocean room was obviously the sweeping Pacific views, but the hand-crafted teak soaking tubs on the balcony were a close second. In the bathrooms, airy skylights brighten the space, and a glass window in the shower lets you watch the waves roll in as you rinse off after a beach walk. If you want to unwind with a movie, a handy tablet can be used to lower a flat-screen television from the ceiling, but other in-room highlights include a Bluetooth speaker, blackout blinds and a complimentary mini bar with premium snacks that can be restocked daily.
The Food & Drink
Though there is no designated restaurant at the hotel, visitors can walk right over to Nobu Malibu for a sushi dinner at sunset. Additionally, the property offers a custom in-room dining menu that guests can order from should they prefer to get cozy in a linen yukata and dine on their picturesque terrace, rather than gussy up for a sceny dinner at one of LA’s most celebrity-loved restaurants. A daily, made-to-order breakfast is also included in your nightly rate.
The Amenities
Outside of the easy beach access and in-room dining from Nobu, premium amenities include private spa treatments from SPIRIT Spa Services and access to the Malibu Racquet Club. The 24/7 concierge can also help arrange individual surf lessons, yoga classes, and guided hikes.

Nobu Ryokan is located in the heart of Malibu, so everything from the iconic pier to the historic Adamson House is within walking distance. Just a short drive away, you’ll find all of the great restaurants and shops at the Malibu Country Mart and Cross Creek Ranch. Can’t-miss eateries include Clark’s Oyster Bar, Lucky’s, Cafe Habana, Broad Street Oyster Co. and Taverna Tony.
