Vinophiles know Sonoma County’s Healdsburg delivers: exceptional wines, a charming town square, and a farm-to-table scene that rivals anywhere in California. But with the arrival of Little Saint—a buzzy, 100% plant-based restaurant and community hub—the town has added something new to its repertoire: a design-forward stay just steps away from it all.
Hotel Snapshot
Hidden behind the restaurant, The Cottages at Little Saint is a four-key hideaway that feels more like a private garden haven rather than a hotel. When you first arrive, the expansive, barn-style building might have you second-guessing if you’re in the right place. Then, you’re guided around back—where a whimsical, hedge-lined entry reveals the cottages, and suddenly, it all clicks. It’s intimate, a little unexpected, and entirely its own world.
Design & Character
Originally built in the 1980s, the tiny village within a village—if you will—in the heart of Healdsburg has long been a pillar of this wine country hamlet. Reinvented through the whimsical lens of designer Ken Fulk, this colorful rebirth was meant to serve as an homage to its host, Little Saint, as a bespoke retreat to return at the end of the day—and the neighborhood has embraced it in full (more on its community capturing later).
The Rooms
With just four cottages—Gimme Shelter, Court, Spark, and Deja Vu—each abode nods to music legends like The Rolling Stones, layering playful references with richly textured interiors. Equipped with kitchenettes, dining tables, living rooms, rain showers, and outdoor patios, these spaces are designed to make guests feel right at home. That bare-hotel-room feeling simply doesn’t exist here.
Each cottage is distinct in both design and layout, evoking different moods depending on your stay style. Inside Court, the 1,000-square-foot space is ideal for groups or families, with both king and queen bedrooms—and the option to connect to the neighboring Spark. A hidden doorway tucked behind an armoire adds a subtle Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe moment. Moody interiors are balanced with English countryside touches: fox-patterned wallpaper, rooster ceramics, hound paintings, and an earthy palette of greens, blues, browns, and sunflower yellow in the bathroom.
I checked into Gimme Shelter, where beamed ceilings and hand-hewn hardwood floors combine with vintage farm-style interiors. Pomegranate-printed wallpaper covers the living area, while teal, red-brown, and golden yellow hues coexist. The space melds maximalist flair with welcoming warmth, potentially tempting even the most dedicated minimalist to embrace color.
Leaning into the musical thread, each room is outfitted with a retro record player and a curated stack of vinyl to spin. After a night of live music at Little Saint, you’ll want to return and put one on. (My mom and I went straight for Cher’s Greatest Hits—no notes.)
In fact, the collection even got a stamp of approval from a certain local rock legend who once popped in and casually noted, “You don’t have any Metallica records in here…,” as shared by Little Saint co-owner Jeff Ubben.
Food & Drink
Entirely plant-based, gluten-free, and sourced from Little Saint’s own farm just five minutes down the road, the cuisine here redefines what a vegetable-forward menu can be. The two-story space is a chameleon. In the morning, it doubles as a quaint café for almond croissants and housemade syrups. Later, it becomes a buzzing happy hour and then a moody late-night music hub.
Culinary Director Deborah Mullin guided us through the evening menu, where each dish felt as visually striking as it was unexpected. We oohed and awed over bright vegetables arranged like edible artwork and quickly had our perceptions of “cheese” challenged—the mushroom-and-cashew-based board being a standout (don’t knock it until you try it). Other highlights included the Fried Lion’s Mane, mimicking the texture of orange chicken, and the Hearth-Roasted Leeks served over an almond and pistachio romesco. For dessert, a chocolate hazelnut mousse and Meyer lemon meringue tart delivered just the right amount of indulgence.
On the drinks side, Beverage Director Daniel recommended the Gin Martini Flight—a trio of the Yuzu Sake Martini, Reverse Martini, and citrus-forward 1906. Each sip built on the next, moving from bright and slightly sweet to crisp and spirit-forward. The wine program is equally worth exploring: an 800+ bottle list curated by Wine Director Laurel, with a strong emphasis on California producers, including female-founded, LGBTQ+-owned, and BIPOC-owned labels.
We left full—but not weighed down—the kind of meal that lingers in your mind more than your stomach. It did make us wonder: could we go fully plant-based?
The Amenities
On Thursday evenings, the Healdsburg community gathers for complimentary live entertainment at Little Saint’s expansive upstairs deck. People flocked here to dance, sway, and sip local brews or non-alcoholic beverages while local performers came to show their stuff. I had the pleasure of listening to Junaco, who strummed and hummed tunes of their latest album comprising indie rock beats.
During the summer months, the splendors of Northern California are best experienced poolside at the cottage's outdoor pool, which can be heated up to 80 degrees Fahrenheit on those more crisp mornings.
Location & Neighborhood
A mere stone’s throw from downtown Healdsburg, you’ll find restaurants, wine bars, art galleries, and boutiques aplenty. We stopped by Willi’s Seafood & Raw Bar for oysters and a quick glass of wine during happy hour. Along Healdsburg Avenue, women’s clothing boutiques like Leaven and Susan Graf Limited caught our eye. A stroll around Healdsburg Plaza and a visit to the eight-acre Little Saint Farm just down the road are must-dos.
